1Checks common to every Dior bag
Whatever the model, four points always come first:
✔️ The hardware: heavy metal, the same finish on every piece, fine and even engravings.
✔️ The stitching: small, tight, even stitches, no loose threads, neatly turned corners, smooth edges.
✔️ Consistency: model, material, hardware, stamp and date code must all belong to the same period.
Two periods, two stamps
On both of these authentic pieces the stamping is fine and even, the serif letters are well spaced and aligned, and the gold stays sharp despite the years. A stamp with thick, smudged or crooked letters, or gold that bleeds past the letters, should raise a flag.

2How to spot genuine Dior Oblique canvas?
The Oblique pattern, created by Marc Bohan in 1967, covers Boston travel bags, canvas Saddles and many vintage accessories. It is also the house's most copied canvas, because it looks easy to reproduce.
What we look at:
✔️ The pattern is even across the whole surface: same spacing, same slant from one row to the next
✔️ At the seams the pattern lines up cleanly and stays symmetrical on both sides of the bag
✔️ Leather trims (corners, handles, straps) are thick and well stitched, with an even edge
❌ Blurry pattern, distorted letters, drifting rows or canvas that looks like printed plastic = red flag
Look at the canvas very closely: on vintage pieces the pattern is woven as a jacquard. The threads themselves form the letters, and you can see the weave. A canvas where the pattern seems to sit on the surface, smooth and flat, is not original Oblique canvas. The metal “Dior” logo, when present, has interlocking letters with clean outlines and an even gold finish.
On a vintage piece, patina on the leather and a slightly softened canvas are normal. A pattern that was irregular from the start is not.
3How to authenticate a Dior Book Tote?
Launched in 2018 by Maria Grazia Chiuri, the Book Tote is now one of the most counterfeited Dior bags. What sets it apart: the pattern and lettering are embroidered, not printed. That is the first thing to check.
✔️ The “CHRISTIAN DIOR” lettering is centred, with evenly spaced letters, and a small “PARIS” underneath
✔️ The pattern is aligned with the edges, with no shift between front and back
✔️ The embroidered handles are taut, with no loose threads where they join the bag
❌ Smooth or printed canvas, letters of uneven size, pattern cut at an angle = red flag
The Book Tote comes in several sizes, from mini to large, and in many versions (Oblique, Toile de Jouy, flowers, personalised embroidery). Check that the version offered to you was actually made by the house: a colour or pattern that cannot be found in Dior's archives should raise a flag.
4How to authenticate a Dior Saddle?
Designed by John Galliano and shown at the spring-summer 2000 show, the Saddle was relaunched by the house in 2018. So there are vintage Saddles and recent ones, and the checkpoints differ slightly by period.
✔️ The metal elements (the “D” and the “CD” initials) are heavy and well finished, with crisp edges
✔️ The metal colour is the same on every piece of hardware
✔️ Stamp and date code match the period: a “vintage” Saddle cannot carry a 2020s chip
❌ Light metal, smudged engraving, misshapen silhouette or a flap that does not close straight = red flag
5The Lady Dior: Cannage and charms
For the Lady Dior, the two decisive points are the Cannage (even, padded diamonds that continue across the seams) and the D·I·O·R charms (solid metal, letters in order, linked by soldered rings). Everything is detailed in our complete Lady Dior guide, with sizes and a date code decoder.
Both pieces share the same markers: even top-stitched Cannage, well-padded diamonds, the D·I·O·R charms and the “CD” initials engraved on the rings that hold the handles. The hardware is silver-tone on one and gold-tone on the other: inside, the stamp must follow the same colour. On the black bag, the contrast stitching must be as even as tone-on-tone stitching, because the slightest crooked stitch shows immediately.
6The Miss Dior: the engraved clasp
On Miss Dior bags, the metal clasp is the first piece to examine. The “Dior” engraving must be sharp, fine and well centred, with even serifs. The buttons and the lock are aligned, the plate is firmly attached, and the metal finish matches the rest of the hardware.
Inside, the “Christian Dior PARIS” stamp is silver, like the bag's hardware: the matching-colour rule, checked on a real piece. The “MADE IN ITALY” mention is blind-stamped, with no colour, in even, well-spaced letters.
Signs of wear on the metal are normal on a piece that has been used. A blurry, overly deep or off-centre engraving, or a light or poorly fitted clasp, is not.
7Where is the date code on a Dior bag?
The date code is usually stamped on the back of the interior leather tab, the one that carries “Christian Dior”, or inside an interior pocket. Since 2021, an NFC chip embedded in the lining has gradually replaced the visible code.

Two examples from our stock
According to the reading method most widely used by authenticators, the last four digits are read crosswise: the 1st and 3rd give the month, the 2nd and 4th give the year. For “0260”: 0 and 6 give June, 2 and 0 give 2020. A Book Tote made in June 2020 fits a model launched in 2018. A Book Tote whose code pointed to a year before 2018 would be suspect.
On our Miss Dior, the code “12-MA-0156” is blind-stamped, with no gold. Same reading: 0 and 5 give May, 1 and 6 give 2016. Gold or blind-stamped depending on the model, the code must always be sharp, straight and even.
8Red flags, model by model

How do you check whether a Dior bag is authentic?
First check the “Christian Dior” interior stamp, the hardware, the stitching and the date code, then the point specific to the model: the evenness of the Oblique canvas, the Book Tote embroidery, the Saddle hardware or the Lady Dior Cannage and charms. If in doubt, an Entrupy analysis gives a reliable result.
How can you tell if a Dior Book Tote is real?
On an authentic Book Tote, the pattern and the “CHRISTIAN DIOR” lettering are embroidered: you can see and feel the raised threads. The lettering is centred, the letters evenly spaced, and the pattern stays aligned with the edges. Smooth or printed canvas is a sign of a counterfeit.
Do all Dior bags have a date code?
No. Vintage pieces from before the 2000s often have none, and since 2021 the house has gradually replaced the visible code with an NFC chip in the lining. A missing code does not condemn a bag, but a code that does not match the model's period should raise a flag.
What is Dior Oblique canvas?
It is the house monogram pattern, created by Marc Bohan in 1967. You will find it on vintage Boston travel bags, the canvas Saddle and the Book Tote. On an authentic piece the pattern is sharp, even and lines up cleanly at the seams.
