We get asked the question in almost every live session: what is the best first Louis Vuitton bag to buy? Nine out of ten times, we give the same answer. A Speedy. Since we source our pieces in Japan, it's the model that passes through our hands most often, and rarely stays on display for long. That's why it's so important to us, and everything we'd like you to know before choosing yours.

1The History of the Speedy
The Speedy was born in 1930. At the time, everything was moving faster. Cars, trains, and planes were changing the way we travel, and Louis Vuitton imagined a soft bag to match this new pace. The house first named it "Express," then "Speedy." The name says it all. Its rounded shape, however, comes directly from the famous Keepall travel bag, whose silhouette it takes on in a more compact form, this time designed to be carried by hand every day.
Upon its release, the Speedy only came in large sizes (30, 35, and 40 cm). It wasn't until the 1960s that it became the small handbag everyone recognizes today.
2Key Dates
A few dates are enough to summarize its career:
| Year | Event |
|---|---|
| 1930 | Creation of the Speedy, derived from the Keepall, in the "Express" line |
| 1965 | Audrey Hepburn requested a smaller version for everyday use: the Speedy 25 was born |
| 2001 | Graffiti edition by Stephen Sprouse |
| 2003 | Monogram Multicolore edition by Takashi Murakami |
| 2006 | Launch of the Damier Azur canvas, also used for the Speedy |
| 2011 | Introduction of the Speedy Bandoulière, with its removable strap for shoulder or cross-body wear |
| 2020s | The Nano Speedy reignites enthusiasm among a new generation |
3Who created the Speedy?
Behind the Speedy is Gaston-Louis Vuitton, the founder's grandson. It was he who, in the interwar period, steered the house towards softer bags, adapted to a life on the go.
But if the Speedy became an icon, it owes it mostly to Audrey Hepburn. In 1965, the actress asked Louis Vuitton for a smaller, more practical version for everyday use than the Speedy 35. The house created the Speedy 25 for her. She was then seen everywhere with it, and this small travel bag became a fashion accessory in its own right. Even today, the 25 remains our preferred size for a first Speedy.
4Different Canvases and Leathers
The Speedy has existed in almost all of the brand's signature materials. Here are the ones you'll most often come across with us:
| Material | Description |
|---|---|
| Monogram Canvas | The historical and most recognizable version. Beige and brown coated canvas with LV and flower patterns, with natural leather (vachetta) handles and trims that develop a patina over time. |
| Damier Ébène Canvas | Dark brown and black Damier, more discreet than the Monogram, with no visible vachetta leather. |
| Damier Azur Canvas | Light blue and cream Damier (since 2006). The summery and luminous version. |
| Épi Leather | Textured leather with fine ribs, solid color. More structured and understated than canvas. |
| Monogram Empreinte | Soft calfskin embossed with the Monogram pattern. An all-leather, more premium version. |
| Limited Editions | Multicolore (Murakami), Graffiti (Sprouse), Mini Lin, capsule editions… highly sought after by collectors. |
💡 Good to know. On Monogram and Damier Azur versions, the vachetta leather of the handles is not originally dyed. It darkens and develops a patina with time and contact. A regular honey patina is a good sign, indicating a bag that has aged well. Dark and irregular stains, however, often indicate a lack of care.
5Different Sizes
| Model | Width | Who it's for, what it's used for |
|---|---|---|
| Nano Speedy | ≈ 16 cm | The trendy mini bag, worn on the shoulder or cross-body thanks to its strap |
| Speedy 25 | ≈ 25 cm | The most iconic, Audrey Hepburn's. Compact, perfect for everyday use |
| Speedy 30 | ≈ 30 cm | The most versatile. It holds everything you need for a day |
| Speedy 35 | ≈ 35 cm | Large size, for those who carry a lot |
| Speedy 40 | ≈ 40 cm | The original size, almost a tote bag or small travel bag |
Each size exists in a classic version (carried by hand) and, since 2011, in a Bandoulière version with a removable strap. Today, it's the most requested version, for its versatility.
6How to Spot a Real Speedy?
The Speedy is one of the most copied bags in the world, so we take the time to check each piece. The important points: the regularity and symmetry of the Monogram or Damier pattern (especially at the seams), the crisp mustard yellow stitching, the date code engraved inside, the quality of the gold hardware stamped "Louis Vuitton," the lock with its numbered key, and the natural patina of the leather. We detail the entire method, with the date code decoder, in our Louis Vuitton authentication guide.
And for independent, verifiable proof, each piece can be accompanied by an Entrupy authenticity certificate.
7The Pre-owned Speedy: Our Advice
In our opinion, it's one of the best first purchases in luxury vintage. It's timeless, available within many budgets depending on size and condition, and it holds its value very well. Our advice: prioritize a complete piece, with its padlock and keys, and a very clean canvas. That's what makes the difference when reselling.

8Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most popular Speedy size?
The Speedy 25, created in 1965 for Audrey Hepburn. Its compact size makes it the most popular for everyday wear. The 30 follows closely, for those who want a bit more capacity. It's also our top duo.
What is the difference between the Speedy and the Speedy Bandoulière?
The classic Speedy is carried only by hand. The Speedy Bandoulière, introduced in 2011, comes with a removable strap that allows it to be worn on the shoulder or cross-body. This is currently the most requested version.
Is the Speedy a good investment?
Yes, like most Louis Vuitton bags in Monogram or Damier canvas. In good condition and complete, it retains its value very well and remains sought after in the pre-owned market, regardless of trends.
How do I know if my Speedy is authentic?
Check the regularity of the pattern and stitching, the date code inside, the engraved hardware, and the leather's patina. The safest way is to buy from a seller who expertly appraises each piece and provides verifiable proof, such as an Entrupy certificate.
