A well-maintained luxury bag lasts for decades—and retains, or even increases, its resale value. But each material has its own needs: lambskin is not maintained like coated canvas, nor Vachetta like caviar. Here are our 8 expert tips, followed by a material-specific care table and a "do's/don'ts" list.

📋 8 Care Tips
1How to properly store your luxury bag?
Always store your bag in its dustbag (breathable fabric cover), away from light and humidity, and upright on a shelf. Stuff the inside with acid-free tissue paper or a dedicated cushion to maintain its shape and prevent structural creases.
Absolutely avoid airtight plastic bags: leather needs to breathe, otherwise it risks mold. Never hang a bag by its handles for a long period—they would become permanently deformed. In humid climates, a silica gel packet slipped into the dustbag is a good habit.
2Waterproof and nourish the leather
Before the first use, apply a leather-specific waterproofing spray from 20 cm away, in a thin, even layer—and always test on an inconspicuous area beforehand. Repeat this a few times a year and after each exposure to rain.
Two to three times a year, nourish smooth leather with a specific cream (e.g., fine leather cream) to prevent it from drying out and cracking. Never use household products, baby wipes, or alcohol: they damage the grain, color, and surface treatment.
3How to care for Vachetta leather?
Natural Vachetta leather (such as the beige handles and piping on Louis Vuitton bags) is neither dyed nor treated: it darkens naturally over time to develop a beautiful honey patina. This is highly sought after—but this leather is extremely sensitive to stains and water when it is light.
Handle it with clean, dry hands, keep it away from water, perfume, and makeup (which leave permanent stains), and allow the patina to form evenly by exposing the bag to soft, indirect light. Some collectors accelerate and homogenize the patina this way, but never force it.
4Clean gently
For routine maintenance, gently wipe your bag with a soft, dry, or slightly damp cloth after each prolonged use. For a stain, use a product specific to the leather type, always tested beforehand on a hidden area, and work with small, light circular motions.
Never rub vigorously and do not saturate the leather: excess water creates permanent rings. For coated canvas (Monogram, Cannage canvas), a slightly damp cloth followed by immediate drying is sufficient.
5How to protect your bag from water and sun?
Water, heat, and direct sunlight are leather's worst enemies: they dry it out, discolour it, and deform it. Avoid leaving your bag in a car in direct sunlight, near a radiator, or behind a sunny window—even a few hours can be enough to mark the leather.
If your bag gets wet in the rain, blot it immediately (without rubbing) with a dry cloth, stuff it to maintain its shape, and let it air dry away from any heat source. Never use a hairdryer.
6Preserving hardware
Gold or silver hardware (clasps, chains, charms, zippers) can tarnish over time due to ambient humidity. Wipe it regularly with a soft, dry cloth, and keep the original protective film on new pieces for as long as possible.
Avoid abrasive products and metal cleaners, which scratch or permanently alter the original finish (gold plating, palladium). Also avoid prolonged contact with perfumes and creams, which accelerate oxidation.
7Do not overload or crush
An overloaded bag deforms and weakens its seams, handles, and base. Respect the reasonable capacity of each item, distribute the weight, and use an inner pouch or organizer to structure the contents and protect the lining.
Beware of uncapped pens, keys, and poorly closed cosmetics: a leak can permanently stain the lining. In the wardrobe, never place heavy objects on the bag, which would crush it.
8Entrust significant care to a professional
For deep cleaning, corner repairs, re-dyeing, or replacing linings or Vachetta, contact a luxury leather goods specialist (bag spa). Professional intervention can give a piece a second life—and preserve, or even increase, its resale value.
A well-cared-for bag is a bag that lasts and sells well: this is the whole point of investing in quality pre-owned luxury.

Frequently Asked Questions
How to store a luxury bag?
Store it in its breathable dustbag, away from light and humidity, upright on a shelf, stuffing the inside with acid-free tissue paper to maintain its shape. Avoid airtight plastic bags, which prevent the leather from breathing, and never hang it by its handles for a long time.
How to care for Vachetta leather?
Vachetta is neither dyed nor treated: it naturally darkens to develop a honey patina, but remains very sensitive to stains and water when it is light. Handle it with clean, dry hands, keep it away from water, perfume, and makeup, and allow the patina to form evenly in indirect light.
Can a luxury bag be cleaned with wipes?
No. Baby wipes, alcohol, and household products damage the grain, color, and surface treatment of the leather. For routine care, use a soft, dry, or slightly damp cloth, and for a stain, a product specific to the leather type, always tested beforehand on a hidden area.
What to do if my bag gets wet in the rain?
Blot it immediately, without rubbing, with a dry cloth, stuff it to maintain its shape, then let it air dry away from any heat source. Never use a hairdryer: heat dries out and deforms the leather.
How often should leather be nourished?
Nourish smooth leather two to three times a year with a specific fine leather cream to prevent it from drying out and cracking. Also remember to waterproof a few times a year and after each exposure to rain.
