What is a certificate of authenticity for a luxury handbag?

Certificat d'authenticité Entrupy — Le Comptoir Vintage

"Do you have a certificate of authenticity?" This is the first question any serious buyer asks before investing in a pre-owned luxury bag. But not all "certificates" are equal—and some have no real value. Here's what you really need to know before buying, including details of our own certification process.

1What are the different types of "certificates"?

In the pre-owned luxury market, the word "certificate" refers to very different documents, with highly unequal evidentiary value:

• The official certificate from the house (rare, given upon new purchase)
• The original purchase invoice
• The certificate from an independent expert (leather craftsman, sworn appraiser)
• The digital certificate via artificial intelligence (e.g., Entrupy)
• A reseller's "in-house certificate" — worthless if the reseller is not independent or recognized

The problem: anyone can print a document titled "certificate of authenticity" without any real verification behind it. A true certificate must be traceable, dated, and issued by a trusted third party—not by the seller themselves.

2The luxury house's certificate

This is the Holy Grail—but also the rarest. Historically, some houses (Hermès, in particular) provided a card or certificate with the purchase of certain exceptional items. For most Louis Vuitton, Chanel, or Dior bags, no certificate is given at the time of purchase—only an invoice accompanies it.

Beware of sellers claiming to have a "Louis Vuitton certificate" or "Chanel certificate": in the vast majority of cases, these houses do not issue this type of document for their ready-to-wear bags.

Original documents and accessories: elements of trust, but not certificates in themselves.

3Does the purchase invoice prove authenticity?

This is the strongest proof when it exists: it certifies that the item was purchased at an official point of sale on a specific date. It does not by itself prove the authenticity of the item in hand (an invoice can be associated with another bag during resale), but it significantly reinforces trust, especially when accompanied by a physical verification.

In the pre-owned market, the original invoice is often lost over successive resales—its absence is therefore not an alarm signal in itself, but its presence is always a plus.

4The certificate from an independent expert

Leather craftsmen, auctioneers, or sworn appraisers can issue a certificate after physical examination of the item. This is a serious approach, but it relies on human eye and experience—excellent on classic points (leather, stitching, hardware), but sometimes flawed when faced with the most sophisticated counterfeits.

A good expert certificate indicates the name and qualifications of the signatory, the date of examination, and precisely describes the item examined (serial number, photos).

5Entrupy: Authentication by artificial intelligence

Entrupy is a technology used by the world's leading players in pre-owned luxury. Its principle: a microscopic camera captures the texture of the leather, fabric, or material at the grain level, invisible to the naked eye. This imprint is compared to a database of millions of authentic items and referenced counterfeits by a machine learning model.

The Entrupy certificate: a timestamped and verifiable digital footprint.

The decisive advantage: unlike the human eye, the model does not get tired, is not swayed by a sales pitch, and detects micro-differences in texture that no expert can see with the naked eye. The result is a timestamped digital certificate, with a unique verifiable ID.

⚠️ Good to know: Entrupy does not authenticate "by judgment" like a human eye, but compares measurable physical data. This is why this technology is today the standard for remote transactions, where the buyer cannot examine the item in hand before purchase.

6Is a certificate sufficient to guarantee authenticity?

No certificate, however serious, replaces a multi-point check performed by a reseller who knows the house: consistency of the model with the era, quality of materials, date code, hardware, stitching... An isolated certificate, without this upstream expertise, can give a false sense of security.

The best guarantee remains the combination: human expertise on all control points (see our brand guides) and technological certificate for high-value items.

7Our commitment at Le Comptoir Vintage

Every item we offer goes through our multi-point inspection process (canvas, leather, stitching, hardware, date code, historical consistency—detailed in our brand guides). For items over €500, we also offer an Entrupy certificate, available upon request.

You thus buy with the double guarantee of our expertise and a globally recognized technology—with complete confidence, even remotely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Louis Vuitton, Chanel, or Dior bags sold with a certificate of authenticity?

No. For most Louis Vuitton, Chanel, or Dior bags, no certificate is provided at the time of purchase: only an invoice accompanies the item. Therefore, beware of sellers claiming to have a "Louis Vuitton certificate" or "Chanel certificate," as these houses generally do not issue this type of document for their bags.

How do you recognize a true certificate of authenticity?

A reliable certificate must be traceable, dated, and issued by a trusted third party—not by the seller themselves. Anyone can print a document titled "certificate of authenticity" without any real verification behind it, which is why the independence and traceability of the issuer are essential.

What is Entrupy and how does it work?

Entrupy is an artificial intelligence authentication technology: a microscopic camera captures the texture of the leather or material at the grain level, then compares it to a database of millions of authentic and counterfeit items via a machine learning model. The result is a timestamped digital certificate with a unique verifiable ID.

Does the purchase invoice alone prove authenticity?

It is the strongest proof when it exists, as it certifies a purchase at an official point of sale on a specific date. But it does not alone prove the authenticity of the item in hand: an invoice can be associated with another bag during a resale. Its presence reinforces trust, without replacing a physical verification.

Does a certificate alone guarantee the authenticity of a bag?

No. No certificate replaces a multi-point inspection performed by a reseller who knows the house. An isolated certificate can give a false sense of security. The best guarantee remains the combination of human expertise on all control points and a technological certificate for high-value items.
